Curt Boettcher

Curt Boettcher (1944-1987) was an American singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer from Wisconsin. His career spanned 1964 to 1983. (In his later years he altered the spelling of his name to "Boetcher" and "Becher," before reverting to the original spelling of Boettcher.) Boettcher was a pivotal figure in the mid-1960s emergence of Sunshine pop, influencing Brian Wilson before the production of Pet Sounds. Boettcher worked with The Association, Gary Usher, The Millennium, Sagittarius, and The Beach Boys, among others. Curt Boettcher sang some background vocals on The Byrds' The Notorious Byrd Brothers album, a Gary Usher production.

allmuic.com / biography by Jason Ankeny

Producer and composer Curt Boettcher was among the principal architects of the sunshine pop sound of the mid-'60s, his harmony laden, melody rich approach gracing the Top Ten hits of the Association as well as his own projects, including Sagittarius and the Millennium. Born and raised in Wisconsin, he began his career as a folksinger, co-founding the GoldeBriars in 1962; the group's self-titled debut album appeared on Epic two years later. Although the GoldeBriars' complex harmonies anticipated the style of Boettcher's subsequent work, the foursome dissolved after a second LP, Straight Ahead; he then turned to studio work, in 1966 arranging the Association's breakthrough hit "Along Comes Mary."

The chart-topping "Cherish" followed and Boettcher also produced the band's debut album And Then, Along Comes the Association; however, the collaboration soon ended and in between producing material for Tommy Roe, Boettcher turned his focus to his own group the Ballroom, recording a long-unreleased LP which finally saw release three decades later on Rev-Ola under the title Preparing for the Millennium. Boettcher then signed on with producer Gary Usher's studio supergroup Sagittarius; 1967's Present Tense also featured contributions from the Beach Boys' Bruce Johnston and Glen Campbell, the latter assuming lead vocals on the classic "My World Fell Down."

While recording Present Tense, Boettcher formed the Millennium, which issued its sole album Begin -- the product of what was then the most costly recording session in the history of Columbia Records -- in 1968. After the record's commercial failure, he returned to studio work, but in 1973 issued a solo album, There's an Innocent Face. In the process of contributing production and session vocals to a handful of late-'70s Beach Boys releases, Boettcher changed his name to the more phonetic Becher; he died in 1987.

Sandy Salisbury

Graham Salisbury (also known as Sandy Salisbury) (born 1944, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American author. He has written many books including Under the Blood Red Sun, his most famous novel. He lives with his family in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Salisbury grew up in Hawaii, and lived in Kailua, Oahu. He later attended Hawaii Preparatory Academy in Kamuela, Hawaii. He was also a songwriter and musician in the late 1960s, and is best known for his association with Curt Boettcher.

He was a member of Boettcher's group The Millennium, as well as an earlier group called The Ballroom, before attempting a solo career of his own, with Boettcher producing, on Gary Usher's Together Records label. Though several singles were released and an album was completed, the financial failure of the label contributed to the commercial failure of the singles and caused the album to remain unreleased for over 30 years. Following this, Salisbury worked several jobs before becoming an author of children's literature (under his given name). In the early 2000s, compilations of his work started appearing, including the release of his late 1960s solo album.

allmuic.com / biography by Tim Sendra

Sandy Salisbury was a honey-voiced member of sunshine pop guru Curt Boettcher's cast of singers and players responsible for some of the finest pop records of the 1960s. Boettcher and Salisbury met up in Boettcher's group the Ballroom and found that their voices blended together magically. the Ballroom had a brief existence and soon Salisbury and Boettcher formed Millennium. Salisbury wrote songs as well as sang, and along with the other members of Millennium, he did work on Sagitarrius's classic 1967 album Present Tense as well as other Boettcher projects. Millennium released only one album and Salisbury soon recorded a solo record for producer Gary Usher's Tomorrow label. The record was to be called Sandy and featured most of the members of Millennium, but sadly it was never released due to problems at the label.

In 2000, it was finally issued by Poptones and instantly became a sunshine pop classic. Also in 2000, Dreamsville released a CD of demos Salisbury recorded in the late '60s for his music publisher. These wonderful songs never saw the light of day at the time because Boettcher told the publisher he wanted them for future projects. These projects never came about because Boettcher lost favor with the music business and pretty much disappeared. So did Salisbury. It is a shame that these two released so little music at the time because there were no finer practitioners of California sunshine pop. In later years Salisbury has reverted to his given name of Graham and has written many well-received children's books. In 2005 Sandy was reissued again by Rev-Ola with the added attraction of 13 bonus tracks, five of which were previously unreleased.

Lee Mallory

Lee Mallory (1945-2005) was a singer, songwriter and guitarist who was part of such projects as The Millennium and Sagittarius. His most successful single was a cover of the Phil Ochs/Bob Gibson song "That's The Way It's Going To Be". The song, produced by Curt Boettcher, reached #86 on the charts and was a surprise hit in Seattle. A CD by the same name was released in 2002, with many songs and demos Mallory had recorded during the 60s. Lee Mallory helped start it all: the California Sound of the 1960s.

allmuic.com / biography by Richie Unterberger

Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Lee Mallory might be best known as a member of the Millennium, the late-'60s sunshine pop group that garnered a sizable cult following with their sole album. Mallory wrote or co-wrote some of the material for the elaborately produced band, which crossed the sound of the 1966-1967 Beach Boys with more pop-oriented Southern California harmony pop. On the Millennium's Begin album, Mallory was the sole writer of the tracks "I'm with You," "Sing to Me," and "Some Sunny Day," co-authoring some of the other tunes as well. Mallory also did a couple of singles under his own name for Valiant Records in 1966-1967. The most successful of these, "That's the Way It's Gonna Be," reached number 86 and was a big hit in Seattle. It was also the most notable of his recording efforts, with a buoyant yet complex production heavy on producer Curt Boettcher's trademark high vocal-harmony arrangements.
Surprisingly, this was a cover of a song written by Phil Ochs and folk musician Bob Gibson (and appears in a folk version on Ochs' The Broadside Tapes 1 album), though its folk roots were pretty unrecognizable by the time Mallory and Boettcher had made it over into a densely produced pop/rock single. Mallory had in fact been a folk musician in the early and mid-'60s, though he went in a very pop direction after hooking up with Boettcher. Mallory also contributed to various other Boettcher-associated groups, including the Ballroom, Summer's Children, and Sagittarius. Mallory did quite a bit of recording in the 1960s that was never issued at the time. Twenty of his 1966-1970 demos appear on the CD That's the Way It's Gonna Be, comprised primarily of his own compositions. These form a worthwhile adjunct to his better-known work with the Millennium, sometimes with a harder-rocking current than flows through the Millennium's material.

The Millennium

en.wikipedia.org
The Millennium was an American super group based in California, who were conceived by Curt Boettcher. The group consisted of psychedelic rock musicians, and they incorporated sunshine pop harmonies. The roots of the band lie in several groups. Boettcher had originally worked with drummer Ron Edgar for a brief time in the folk group The GoldeBriars. Following the dissolution of The GoldeBriars, Edgar joined the group The Music Machine, which also featured Doug Rhodes on bass. The Music Machine scored a Top 20 hit with the song "Talk Talk" before disbanding. Boettcher had also formed a group called The Ballroom, which featured Sandy Salisbury as a vocalist. Lee Mallory had worked as a songwriter and solo performer, and Boettcher had produced some of his recordings, including a cover of Phil
